The Fool

In all old English drama, the fool was a stock character. Often, he could see what other actors could not; he kept himself apart from the main plot. He was neither good guy nor bad guy...an observer, not a player. He never got the girl, in other words, but he didn't get killed either. The Fool just keeps his eyes open and tries to entertain.
